Community Service Award
Each year since 1998, EvergreenHealth's Board of Commissioners recognizes a staff member, volunteer, heath care activist, physician or organization by awarding them the Community Service Award. This award is given to those who make a profound impact on enhancing the community's health and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to our most important values: compassion, respect, excellence, collaboration and accountability.
2023 Recipients
Jeff & Merrie Tomlin
This award honors Jeff Tomlin, MD, who served this community for more than 30 years and served our country for more than 40 years with the steadfast support of Merrie Tomlin, RN, BSN (retired). The couple are lifelong residents of the District. Dr. Tomlin led initiatives to improve patient care and develop comprehensive safety and quality programs. Under his leadership, EvergreenHealth joined the top 1% of health care organizations nationwide for patient outcomes, and his commitment to emergency preparedness positioned the organization to respond quickly to the first large community outbreak of COVID-19 in the U.S. His dedication to quality and safety, with the support of his family, leaves an enduring legacy.
With the presentation of this award (Resolution 944-24), members of the Board of Commissioners and all those gathered expressed their sincere appreciation to Dr. and Merrie Tomlin for their decades-long commitment to EvergreenHealth and our community.
Microsoft
This award recognizes the remarkable commitment displayed during the pandemic, when Microsoft voluntarily assisted EvergreenHealth and Overlake and collaborated with community agencies to create a robust, effective vaccine program. Over 176,000 COVID vaccinations were administered through the program, with dedicated efforts to reach and support BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities.
Microsoft donated its education center and provided staff support for program operation; implemented tracking software; fully funded the program and covered clinical costs; donated time, leadership and passion around the clock – setting an example and encouraging broader community involvement and support during the pandemic.
With the presentation of this award, the Board of Commissioners expresses its sincere appreciation to Microsoft for its role as a leader in our community during an unprecedented time. Board President Virgil Snyder read the official Resolution No. 942-24 and presented a framed copy to Colleen Daly, PhD, Director of Occupational Health, Safety and Research at Microsoft.
There was a "reunion" spirit to the gathering as people reconnected and reminisced about the challenges and tremendous success of the vaccine program. Some tears were shed, and many people spoke of the kindness and community spirit that fueled this project.
