EvergreenHealth's Mark Freeborn, MD, Among America's Best Spine Surgeons for 2024 by Newsweek
Dr. Freeborn is among just 150 doctors in the country to be recognized.
KIRKLAND, Wash. — EvergreenHealth's Mark Freeborn, MD, has been named one of America's Best Spine Surgeons by Newsweek for 2024. Freeborn is among just 150 doctors in the U.S. to make it on the list.
Freeborn, who also serves as chief surgeon of EvergreenHealth and as chief medical officer of the EvergreenHealth Medical Group, is a pioneer in minimally invasive spine surgery. He is responsible for many advancements in lateral spine surgery and is a frequently invited teacher around the world. He is fellowship-trained in orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery and has been actively practicing since 2008.

America's Best Spine Surgeons 2024 were determined based on four data sources:
- Physician Performance Data: Based on Medicare data from CareJourney in 2022, an evaluation of the physician's performed procedures was conducted.
- Recommendations from Peers: During the survey period from March to April 2024, thousands of medical experts (physicians with knowledge in the field of spine surgery, managers/administrators, and other medical professionals in the field of spine surgery) were invited to an online survey via Newsweek.com.
- Quality Assessment: For recommendations in their own state, participants were asked to assess the quality of care (e.g. treatments, follow-up care, use of most recent equipment) for each spine surgeon.
- Certifications: Board certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery was taken into consideration for all eligible spine surgeons.
EvergreenHealth continues to be recognized nationally for its clinical expertise, becoming the only hospital in the entire Pacific Northwest region to be names a Center of Excellence for Orthopedic Surgery and earn certification in Advanced Spine Surgery by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), a hospital accreditation organization through the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid.

"The data driven objective metrics used to determine these awards and recognitions are tremendously validating."
