EvergreenHealth Earns Healthgrades' 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Award™
EvergreenHealth's latest accolade continues the community-owned hospital's tradition of being recognized among the top hospitals in the U.S.
KIRKLAND, Wash. – EvergreenHealth, a community-owned hospital, has been recognized by Healthgrades as the only Puget Sound-area hospital to earn the 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Award™, which places the health system in the top 10% of short-term acute care hospitals evaluated as part of the Healthgrades study.
"Safety is part of every aspect of our care, culture and service and lives throughout our entire health system," said EvergreenHealth CEO Jeff Tomlin, MD. "This recognition is important because it reflects the collaborative effort of doctors, staff, patients and volunteers to remain focused on the teamwork and trusted processes that promote our community of safety. It's a responsibility that's shared across EvergreenHealth, and I'm proud to recognize those efforts today."
As part of its study between 2019-2021, Healthgrades found that four patient safety indicators accounted for 74% of the 164,592 potentially preventable patient safety events that occurred among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals. The four indicators included 1) hip fracture due to an in-hospital fall; 2) collapsed lung resulting from a procedure/surgery; 3) pressure or bed sores acquired in the hospital; and 4) catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in-hospital.
Healthgrades' analysis also revealed that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Award were, on average*:
- 61.4% less likely to experience an in-hospital fall resulting in hip fracture, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals
- 52.7% less likely to experience a collapsed lung resulting from a procedure or surgery in or around the chest, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals
- 66.1% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals
- 67.3% less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at nonrecipient hospitals
"Through our 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Awards, we seek to recognize hospitals that excel in providing top-quality care for their patients while preventing serious injuries during hospital stays," said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and head of Data Science, Healthgrades. "We are proud to name EvergreenHealth as a 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient and look forward to their continued efforts to make patient safety a top priority."
For 2023, EvergreenHealth is one of just two hospitals across five states (Washington, Montana, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska) to be recognized as one of America's 50 Best™ Hospitals by Healthgrades and earn the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™. EvergreenHealth has also earned more No. 1 state rankings from Healthgrades for our services than any other hospital on the West Coast. EvergreenHealth also regularly earns the top safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, a leading independent watchdog organization on hospital quality and safety.
