EvergreenHealth Commissioner Retires After More Than 40 Years of Service
Al DeYoung has represented Bothell, Duvall and Woodinville in Board Position #1 throughout his tenure
Kirkland, Wash. – EvergreenHealth Commissioner Al DeYoung has announced his retirement from the hospital system's board effective Thursday, June 1, 2023. DeYoung served on the EvergreenHealth Board of Commissioners since 1980 in Board Position #1, representing Bothell, Duvall and Woodinville.
Following DeYoung's election in 1980, he served 23 years as Board Chair. Throughout his tenure as commissioner, DeYoung was also a vital committee leader and member, including serving as Chair of the Strategic Planning & Construction Committee and as a member of the Digital Health & Consumer Innovation Committee, Levy Funded and Sponsorship Programs Committee and Community Advisors Planning and Recruitment Committee.
DeYoung has made a tremendous contribution to the Eastside community throughout his life, especially through his work on the EvergreenHealth Board. As commissioner, DeYoung has helped further the trajectory of EvergreenHealth as a public hospital district, which has grown from a 79-bed rural hospital to an integrated two-hospital system providing advanced comprehensive care to more than one million residents across the Eastside.
"During his four-plus decades on the board, Al has stayed committed to our community's health and wellness. That commitment has fueled his desire to grow our organization to meet the needs of our growing and changing Eastside population for the greater part of our 50-year history," said Board Chair Virgil Snyder. "Al's legacy will continue to support EvergreenHealth as we look to the next 50 years and beyond."
When DeYoung became commissioner, he recognized that many Eastside residents at the time were traveling over to Seattle for most of their care. However, he sensed the region was ready for a change and envisioned a future where health care services among the best in the state could be offered close to home for his neighboring communities. Over the last four decades, EvergreenHealth pursued that vision not only with the expansion of its hospitals and clinics but also through the development of community programs and services that address all the needs of everyone on the Eastside.
"As a lifelong resident of the Northshore area, my family's roots run deep throughout the Eastside community. During my time on the board EvergreenHealth has grown into one of the leading hospital systems not only in the region or Washington state but in the entire country," DeYoung said. "I'm so proud to have helped grow such a remarkable organization and to have worked with the amazing EvergreenHealth staff."
With DeYoung's departure, EvergreenHealth is seeking a community member to join the Board of Commissioners. Individuals who are interested in this important and exciting role and reside in King County Public Hospital District #2, specifically the subdistrict of Bothell/Woodinville/Duvall, should apply.
