Clinical Expertise

Sports medicine care for athletes of all ages; orthopedics; minimally invasive surgery for shoulders, hips and knees; cartilage restoration; treatment of sports and overuse injuries.

Philosophy of Care

My primary objective is restoring form and function, whether you have a nagging injury preventing work and exercise, or you're a competitive athlete with a sidelining injury. The key component to achieving this objective is listening to you, because you know your own body best! As a team, you and I will develop treatment plans that incorporate your individual goals and objectives.

While well-trained in the most modern biologic and surgical treatments, I also incorporate a multifaceted approach including nutrition and exercise optimization. I promise to exhaust all non-surgical options before considering surgery as part of your treatment plan.

Personal Information

I grew up in Montana where working with my father at the family lumber yard fostered a love for the great outdoors and a deep appreciation for hard work. I was inspired into medicine by my mother, a clinical laboratory scientist, as she taught me to use a microscope and showed me the wonders of the human body at an early age.

My early passions were sports of all types, which led me to play four years of football and track at Dartmouth College, where I met my next love, my wife Erin. We've built our relationship around a shared love of adventure, travel and the outdoors. We can often be found exploring Washington's mountains and lakes with our young son, who spent much of his first year of life riding in a hiking backpack!

After hanging up the football cleats, I had my own knee surgically treated so I know firsthand the value of a great surgical team and the support required to get back to activity. Nowadays, I'm an avid hiker, alpine skier, water skier and I play as many other sports as I can get my hands on, including pick-up basketball, tennis, mountain biking and strength training. In addition to my enthusiasm for sports and fitness, I'm always working to enhance my knowledge in nutrition and skills in the kitchen.

Dr. Manning is very kind! Needless to mention, very knowledgeable and has always looked out for the best, least invasive course of action possible. He phoned me with the results and referred me to an appropriate surgeon who could help me with my problem. I'm very grateful to him.

I have already recommended Dr. Manning to others! I feel particularly blessed to have been treated by his team in surgery - special mentions to the anesthesiologist, the nurse in the "block" room and his assistant in surgery. A great deal of my post-op progress I attribute to the excellence of these folks.

Dr Manning spent extra time with me, listening and providing advice to improve my mental health. He also let me wait to get a cortisone shot at the same visit. Thank you!

Dr. Manning was kind, enthusiastic, and explained my results well. The only thing that wasn't fantastic was he expressed not understanding why I am in a wheelchair, because my entire appointment was about unmanageable, extreme hip pain that isn't improving and is preventing me from walking.

Every patient should be validated on their experience with pain. Comparing a patient to all the people walking around with an injury with or without symptoms, is iinvalidating that their reality is living with pain every day and unable to perform things they love.

When I described that X-rays would likely not show anything meaningful and suggested an MRI, Dr. Manning supported my wishes and ordered the MRI.

It seemed like he was listening, but the post appointment notes include several inaccuracies that now make me doubt that he was actually listening to me and make me wonder if the diagnosis is correct and if the proposed treatment is feasible. He has not responded to my message about this yet. I sent the message 5 days ago.
